Thin stone and brick give homes weight and permanence, with careful backing and drainage behind them.
Veneer is a thin layer of stone or brick applied to a wall as a finish rather than as structure. Natural thin stone, manufactured stone made from concrete and thin brick cut from fired clay all give the look of masonry without the weight and footing of a full wall. They are often used at the base of walls, around entries, on columns and on accent walls beside siding.
Veneer lasts a long time and needs little care, but the work behind it matters. A weather barrier, drainage path, lath and scratch coat support the stone, and flashing at the top and bottom keeps water out. Bargain or rushed installations often crack or fall off. When done properly, veneer adds a richness and depth that no other siding can match.
