The most common siding in Middle Tennessee: economical, colorful, easy to maintain and easy to get wrong.
Vinyl siding is made from PVC resin, formed into panels that look like lap siding, shake or board and batten. It is the most popular siding in the country because it is economical, comes in many colors and needs only washing. Panels are lightweight and installation is fast, which keeps labor cost down compared with heavier products.
Vinyl is not all the same. Thickness, rigidity and color quality vary widely between product lines, and installation matters even more than the product. Panels must be hung loose so they can expand and contract, and flashing around openings has to be right. Vinyl can crack in cold or in hail and may fade over time, but quality products installed correctly give years of low-fuss service.
