Natural beauty, easy repairs and a regular relationship with a paintbrush or stain.
Cedar and other natural woods have been used on houses for centuries. They look rich when fresh, age gracefully and can be shaped into lap boards, shingles, shakes and board and batten. Natural wood is also easy to repair, since individual pieces can be replaced, and it fits historic and craftsman homes better than almost any other material.
Wood needs regular attention. Without a good finish, sun and rain will gray, check and eventually rot the boards. Priming all sides, keeping boards off the ground and refinishing every few years keep wood in good shape. Insects and woodpeckers are more likely to bother it than other materials. For owners who value natural beauty and accept the upkeep, wood is hard to beat.
