Board and batten, black windows and crisp white walls: here is how to get the modern farmhouse look right.
The modern farmhouse has become the signature look of new homes in Middle Tennessee. Clean white or soft gray walls, vertical board and batten, black windows, gables, metal roof accents and generous porches give it a fresh, welcoming feel. It borrows from old barns and farm homes while staying crisp and updated.
The look depends on proportion and restraint. Board and batten usually covers main walls or gables, lap siding fills secondary areas and trim is clean and simple. Fiber cement is a favorite because it holds crisp lines and paint well, and engineered wood and vinyl can also work. We plan batten spacing, trim widths and color combinations so the house looks custom and balanced, whether you are building new or updating an existing home.
