Panels and boards run top to bottom for a clean, modern line, with careful flashing at the base and the top.
Vertical siding runs from the foundation up to the eaves in one clean line. It makes walls look taller, gives barns and outbuildings a classic look and suits modern homes that want sharp, clean planes. It comes as grooved panels like T1-11 style sheets, vinyl panels, fiber cement boards and metal panels, and each has different needs for fasteners, furring and flashing.
The key to vertical siding is managing water. On a horizontal wall, each course sheds water onto the one below. On a vertical wall, water runs down the face and the seams, so the top, the bottom and every opening need careful flashing, and the base should be kept clear of the ground. We install furring where it is needed, set the first panel plumb, fasten correctly for the product and finish the base and top with trim that keeps weather out and looks neat.
Every following panel depends on the first, so we set and check it carefully before going on.
The base and head of the wall get flashing and trim so water cannot be driven behind the panels.
Where the wall calls for it, furring strips create a drainage gap and a flat surface for fastening.
Grooved panels, vinyl, fiber cement and metal each give a different feel.

Yes. Many modern and farmhouse homes use it on part or all of the exterior.
Board and batten is one vertical style with battens over seams. Vertical siding also includes grooved panels and metal profiles.
It pairs very well with standing seam metal roofs for a crisp modern look.
We usually remove old siding first so we can check the wall and wrap it properly.
