Read the covenants first
Your HOA documents describe what you may change and what needs approval. Look for sections on exterior materials, colors, trim and architectural review.
If the language is vague, ask the board or manager in writing.
Know the review process
Most associations use an architectural review committee. You submit an application, they review it and respond within a set time. Some meet monthly, which affects your schedule.
Ask how long approval typically takes.
Prepare a clear submittal
Include the product name and brand, color name and number, a sample or photo, the scope of work and a photo of the house. The more specific the application, the easier approval is.

Match approved palettes
Some HOAs have approved color lists. Start there. If you want something different, explain why and show how it fits the neighborhood.
Neighbors and the board appreciate thoughtful choices.
Do not start early
Beginning work before approval can lead to fines, stop-work notices and requests to undo the work. A short wait is better than a long dispute.
Get approval in writing and keep a copy.
When approval is denied
Ask why, and what would make it acceptable. Offer alternatives, such as a different color or a closer match to existing homes.
Most boards want homeowners to succeed and are willing to work with you.
Read the rules, submit a clear package and wait for written approval before work begins.
