Siding Calculator: How Much Siding Do I Need?

Enter your walls and gables, take out windows and doors and see the squares of siding, the pieces and the house wrap to order.

These tools give planning-level estimates from typical values and the details you enter. They are not quotes, designs or engineering, and results depend on your actual house, wall condition, access, weather, site conditions and local rules. Only a site visit can confirm what a project needs, and we give you a written scope and price before any work begins.

How it works

Four quick steps.

  1. 01

    Measure each wall

Use outside measurements: width along the ground and height to the eave.

  2. 02

    Add the gables

Gables are triangles: base times height, divided by two.

  3. 03

    Take out openings

Windows, doors and garage doors come out of the total.

  4. 04

    Read the order

Squares, pieces and house wrap, with a waste allowance.

Tips

  • Measure each wall on its own and add a row for every gable.
  • Order a little extra from the same lot so colors match if you need more later.
  • Complex rooflines, many corners and lots of windows add waste.
Questions

About this tool.

What is a square of siding?

A square is one hundred square feet of wall area. Suppliers often sell siding by the square or by the box.

How much extra should I order?

Five to ten percent for simple walls, more for many gables, angles and cuts.

Do I subtract windows and doors?

Yes, but not fully. The tool takes them out and then adds a waste allowance for cuts around them.

Is the answer exact?

No. It is a planning figure. We measure on site before we order.
