How much is damaged
A few damaged panels on a sound wall are a repair. Damage on every wall, or damage that keeps coming back, suggests a bigger problem.
Take photos of the whole house, not just the worst spot.
What is behind it
If sheathing is soft or wet, repairs have to go deeper. Moisture damage that spreads is a replacement trigger because the wall needs to be opened anyway.
A moisture check and probe will show how far damage extends.
Age and condition
Siding that is brittle, heavily faded or no longer available is harder to repair. Old products may not match new panels.
A wall near the end of its life may be better replaced than patched again and again.
Matching
If matching color and profile is not possible, a repair may stand out. Sometimes replacing one full wall, from corner to corner, looks better than a patch.
Bold accent walls can turn a mismatch into a design feature.
Cost over time
Repairs cost less now, but repeated repairs add up. Replacement costs more upfront and resets the clock, often with better wrap and details.
Compare the total over five to ten years.
When to get help
If you are unsure, an inspection with photos and a written report gives a clear answer. We tell you plainly when repair is enough.
Do not wait on moisture issues.
Repair when the wall is sound and the damage is limited. Replace when the problem is widespread or hidden.
